(der 5pezialist)
it might be their first album only, but heimstatt yipotash have been quite a talked about band in the recent years in the german (rhythmic) noise scene. deeply rooted and influenced by their predecessors, they fit very well with the rest of the hands roster, and unveil a debut oscillating constantly between very noisy, huge stomping beats and deep, slowly changing ambient frequencies. the whole thing is intense, dark, quite scraping when it comes to the noise and has some nice headnod-inducing moments. something hands fan can get with their eyes closed.

perpetual beta - cd - hands (2007)

"perpetual beta" is a buzzword from the it sector. it means something like "continuing beta version" and expresses the ambition to vary internet pages by involving a community. some well known examples who represent this in a distinct way are flickr.com, del.icio.us oder myspace.com. whenever you visit one of these pages - they'll always look a bit different and give you more or slightly different information. new technologies are being tested while the pages are still online, well functioning parts are copied or reworked from other sites and parts who do not work as expected will be removed again.
this continuing variation is reflected in our own lives in two ways: every being is influenced by its environment and other beings. we act, we react and we re-arrange things around us by doing so. and this specifically applies to the music of heimstatt yipotash, too. if we listen to music that impresses us it will influence our work. this external process naturally continues to the inside: we vary samples, ideas and song fragments until we are happy with the result. and if our music probably makes you acting, thinking, dancing are reacting in any other ways we finally handed over the process of continuing beta versions over to you.

perpetual beta off
based upon the title, you could conclude that this cd is doomed to be unfinished and in a public testing phase for all eternity, but of course that's not the case. originating from dresden, heimstatt yipotash have delivered a rather complete product with this second album of theirs. this little gem should be able to create an appropriate amount of mayhem among the masses, if you ask me. the deep bass alone is powerful enough to register on the richter seismographic scale, often you can feel the beat in the deepest recesses of your intestines. the unconventional rhythmic electro-industrial with a fair amount of noise on "perpetual beta" has no lack of aplomb and sports an attitude which reminds me of intelligent techno, but minimal electronica and ambient have also nestled themselves in the sonic shrubbery. on the one hand this is refreshing as a reviving shower during a summer day in silicon valley, on the other hand this is also perfectly suitable as background music for the borg-collective while they're busy assimilating planetary civilizations.
various shades of grey dominate the layout of the attractive and aesthetically pleasing packaging made from sturdy cardboard that protects the cd, but that doesn't say anything about the tone colour of the music; its spectrum is much more diverse. even though this disc is considered to be more accessible and dance floor friendlier than its predecessor, still this is anything but regular dance. think of a heavily loaded and more brutal version of haujobb without vocals, that comes a lot closer. a choice selection of distorted samples contributes to the ozone-rich atmosphere of softly humming supercomputers which analyse and dissect the uncountable terabytes of information travelling on the digital highway.
the power of "perpetual beta" resides in the way the dynamic, pulsating music forms a smoothly flowing entirety without this going at the expense of the individual nature of the solitary tracks. the pounding number "muehsal der kosmonautenkrankheit" makes the windows tremble in their frames, while "peak of absence" features hip-hop tendencies. another remarkable piece is "strange kinds of communication", the nightmarish blend of death industrial and dark ambient generates an environment of disquieting horror that never fails to give me goosebumps. and those are just three examples.
impressive, honest and surprising, those are the qualities of heimstatt yipotash. if you prefer to set foot upon untrodden paths with the mentality that the goal of the journey is not the destination, but the journey itself, this might be right up your alley as well. (goth tronic)
the 2nd album of hy sounds definitely more accessible than the "storegga effect" released in 2006. "perpetual beta" sounds less experimental (although there is an experimental basis in their work), but excels in an approach to compose real songs. a few 80s influences emerge from the minimal electronic arrangements while the distorted effect and power comes closer to an artist like monolith. the track "sharing solar resources" is an efficient illustration of this 80s and monolith-mix. a few more cool songs have been placed at the end of the album. "google ate my startup" and "perpetual beta" closing the album are 2 great examples of the evolution this band went through. this is great and minimal electro-industrial stuff. another side of hy is more into sound collages. it stands for their experimental side, which mixes electronics together with industrial elements and numerous samplings. these tracks aren't the most fascinating ones, but they bring some diversity to the tracklist. "perpetual beta" reveals a more homogenous and mature project! (side line magazine)
no u turn - 7" vinyl - kellermusik (2007)

at this 7 inch vinyl our exklusive track "burning town" owns the complete first side. it's a quite harsh, noisy track, not the rhythmic style you may have expected.
on the second side exocet and klima are finishing this fantastic endtime collage.
tracklist:
a1: heimstatt yipotash - burning town -
b1: exocet/klima - no u turn by klima -
b2: exocet/klima - novo revolucia by exocet (klima rmx)
landslide - mp3 3" cd-r - self released (2008)

resuming the storegga effect base theme this new heimstatt yipotash e.p. landslide goes deeper into this matter, reflects from other points of view and generates new moods. so this album is more an intense sequel resp. a supplement to it than a common standalone work.
this ep is dominated by calm, partially ambient soundscapes. rhythmical structures are used very economical. the songs follow on each other seamlessly to symbolize the unity of the tracks and the homogeneous compactness of the album.
tracklist:
natural kill switch (retro) -
strange kinds of communication -
not willing to gravitate -
solid silence -
anything but good news -
storegga landslide -

a collaboration - born from an idea, developed over months and a few hundred kilometers, cumulating in an explosive gig in altenburg (elektroanschlag 10) and simultaneous cd-release... "prototypes" is real teamwork and makes the ideas of takhtahk and hyt to fit perfectly.
each song has been sent digitally from stuttgart to dresden and vice versa for a couple of times, still being developed by each person working on it. this is what makes the album so hugely diversified and originally at the same time - even if the stale idea of "noise" is filled in a ambitious way.
very dancable, partially melodical tracks feel fine right aside badly scraping drone and creaking beats. audible fun in experimenting dominates the brimmed cd-r (71 minutes) in a foldable cover.
fitting to the credo of 9t9 records this album ist limited to 99 hand numbered pieces!

urban night motifs - cd - hands (2009)

heimstatt yipotash turn from the deep sea ("storegga effect") and the world wide web ("perpetual beta") back into the street of action with their new album "urban night motifs". it shows modern urbanity without the common glitter and stories of success.
the album turns various spotlights on an inapproachable, dismissive, dangerous and crude modern metropolis which are inspired by the aesthetics and flair of movies like "renaissance" or "sin city" and daily news reports of so called "social coexistence".
the album tells a quite touchable story, possibly like the soundtrack for some kind of mental cinema. the combination of track titles (e.g. "mindcartridge", "metro dwellers", "pavement chicks"), vocal samples and chained tracks are meant to create anything but a boyant mood. despite this uncharming atmosphere the tracks are very danceable, vivid and forceful.
tracklist:
in statu nascendi -
get lost -
mindcartridge -
breathe in, freak out -
brain amplifier -
augmented reality -
metro dwellers -
urban night motifs -
seismic shift -
well oiled crescent -

"urban night motifs" is already the third album from heimstatt yipotash on the respected hands label. what is very noticeable with heimstatt yipotash is his way of making a very interesting combination of powernoise and electro-industrial, with weird sounds, rhythms and patterns.
his new work seems to represent a sleazy midnight album based in the urban jungle of humanity. the first track, "in statu nasceni", gives way to this feeling. sleazy electro synths and a distorted rhythm. "get lost" puts us straight into a dirty groove. "breathe in, freak out" is a hard and gritty powernoise track, beating up your ears as much as possible. "augmented reality" uses very minimal electro melodies and a more laidback approach. a highlight is the track "metro dwellers", which uses a very good and groovy rhythm that will not allow you to be passive and will make you dance. a song that perfectly fits within the urban night motifs. "well oiled crescent" is a nice retro electro track with lots of sleazy minimal nightclub sounds. this continues with the next track "pavement chicks", but with heavier beats and rhythms added. a nice change of sounds again is "mis/dis/un/in/anti". the song is mid-tempo and uses more abstract rhythms. there are also well-chosen melodic sounds to be heard. "taepodong-2" goes for an all out noise approach where everything is saturated. the album ends with "urban night motifs (club 71)" which is again a very groovy and urban-sounding song with rusty rhythms. a song that will definitely makes you move!
"urban night motifs" is a very good album. this album shows the next step in the heimstatt yipotash discography. while a lot of the sounds are becoming trademark sounds for this project, there's still room for experiments, which is always a big plus. the chosen album title also is a very good representation of what this album is going for. while this is a very rhythm oriented album, with some very interesting club tracks, the album is also very much suited for headphone listening to hear all the subtle intricacies. recommended! (gothtronic online mag (02/2010))
heimstatt yipotash brings 2009 to a good end with the release of their 3rd official full length. andre matthes and thomas niedballa have been quite prolific this year. after the release of a split-cd "prototypes" with the takhtahk project they here strikes back with a quite diversified release exploring different angles of industrial music. this duo that started with a quite experimental approach on their "storegga affect" evolved towards more accessible songs and releases. after a rather industrial minded opener (cf. "in statu nasceni") the track "get lost" surprises with an electro-industrial writing reminding me of the 80s and coming closer to the great geistform. well, if you expect an entire album in this vein, you'll be disappointed.. "urban night motifs" mainly explored industrial territories from where they bring us harder pieces like "mindcartridge", "breathe in, freak out" or yet the real heavy "pavement chicks". this song is led by a murderous rhythmic while the electronic sequences that come close to the edge of trance. the band however remains quite experimental on a few more tracks, but i think it's a damn good thing these pieces were alternated by other ideas and treatments... (side line music mag (12/2009))
3rd album by the elcetronica industrial project. "urban night motifs" offers clubfriendly electro industrial, mixed with intense sound research. trashy but also atmospherical and at the same time dirty conceptual album about metropolis at night. (klangkurier)
